Awesome tour! This area of queens is packed with tiny shops and eateries, and one-of-a-kind experiences can seemingly be found in each of them. Jeff was fantastic. He knows many of the vendors by name, which allows for some great conversations with the people preparing the food.
Very good Jeffy
Emi & Fred; Took the Tastes the World tour with Jeffrey and it was great. Jeffrey, knows this area and the people who live and work here so well it was like visiting with family. The food was just great, but it was Jeffrey's knowledge of the food, and the various cultures and people that made it so special.
I recently visited the United States (from Australia) and spent about 10 days in New York. As it was my second time to New York, I was looking for some off the path and non touristy experiences and I discovered the Queens Tastes of the World tour on the Vayable site. I contacted Jeff on very short notice and asked if he had any upcoming trips. Jeff was very responsive and accommodating and managed to arrange a tour with me and two other people. He provided very clear instructions about the meeting spot and the best way for me to get there. Upon meeting Jeff, I immediately realised that I was in store for a unique and special experience. The Queens area is so diverse and eclectic, and is comprised of so many interesting and self sufficient little communities, who have brought with them their cultures, values, languages, traditions and most importantly, foods, to New York. Getting off the train was quite a surreal experience...it was New York but felt like another country, or planet (in a good way). Jeff was a fantastic guide, right from introductions to the farewells. His curiosity for things and adventurous spirit, combined with his great personality and genuine nature, elevated what would have been just another food tour. He had a great rapport with the various businesses around the place and structured the tour in a way that we would sample as many different cuisines and places of interest as possible within the time frame. Although Jeff put some thought into the route that we would take, it never felt stale or robotic...Jeff improvised a lot on the spot which kept things fresh and unpredictable [in an exciting way]. Overall, it was one of the highlights of my trip and definitely a trip one should seriously consider...taking with you an open mind and sense of adventure...it's a cultural wonderland and Jeff is the ideal person to show you round. His five star reviews are for real and completely deserved. Highly recommended!
This was definitely my favourite tour that I did in NYC! Jeff was super friendly, really knowledgeable and knew everyone in the area. It really felt like a personal experience, something not everyone does which made it really special. The food was amazing, so many things that I never would have tried. My favourite would have to be the avena drink at an Ecuadorean truck. I would recommend this to everyone!
This was a fantastic experience!! Jeff is really knowledgeable about why and what the different ethnic groups are here in Queens, and took us to a wide variety of tastes and cultures. He doesn't overload you with information but has a wealth to share if you are keen and interested. This was a highlight of our NY visit, and we will be recommending this to others!
This was a great tour in a place not on most people's list to visit. Jeff walks you around his local neighbourhood and tailors the tour to the group, seeking out foods that are unfamiliar We tasted food from several counties with information provided by Jeff and a couple of friends he brought along to give a bit more insight into some of the cuisine and culture. The tour gives a cultural context to the foods and a strong sense of the multicultural nature of Queens and how it's changing over time. We sampled food from Nepal, Tibet, Italy, India, Peru and South America. Jeff was flexible with his schedule, an example being stopping to talk to someone he'd not previously seen selling Japanese food on the street. Jeff is low key and approachable. He's a facilitator of a really interesting experience with opportunities to taste food and talk to people from a range of countries and cultures. A very enjoyable tour and I'd feel confident to return to Queens and explore it more when next visiting New York.
Very much enjoyed Jeff's Queens Tastes of the World. We discovered several hidden gems and were very happy to discover so many different cuisines. Recommended for people who love to discover new foods and cultures!
Jeff gave us a great and enjoyable tour. I have lived in NYC for more than 25 years, so it is fun to explore and learn about other neighborhoods with someone who knows it really well. He made it fun by sharing foods and suggesting new things to us. I consider Jeff my Mentor-guide.
Little back street food spots, interesting people, diverse cultures, and easy going guide Perfect day for our Aussie family despite cold and snow. Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon in Queens with Jeff'sTaste Tour
I really like this tour. I will take others......Jeff walked me through not only a neighborhood but many cuisines. His encyclopedic knowledge is wonderful. And unlike most tours he was not on a schedule.....It was our pace........Nice..........
Loved it! Jeff chose a great range of foods for us to try, making sure to offer us cuisines not commonly available in Australia (where we are from). From street stalls to a cafe at the back of a mobile phone shop, it was a fascinating insight into the various cultures that are crammed into Jackson Heights, Queens. It was great to see the way Jeff explores and interacts with his community - we even visited a couple of places he had never been to before. We really enjoyed our afternoon, thanks Jeff!
If you love food, are eager to learn about other cultures and support small business, then this is the tour for you. Jeff is knowledegable about and rightly proud of his home borough, and guided us on a fun and intriguing trail of eateries and stores from Nepalese to Ecuadorian via Albanian/Italian. Having first checked out our likes, dislikes and particular interests, he tailored the afternoon to the tour participants. We left thoroughly sated but keen and confident to return on our own one day. Thoroughly recommended.
Definitely one of the better things I've done in NYC, nice to get off Manhatten & see a different side of the city. Jeff is an awesome guide, providing information about the local area without it seeming like a boring lecture. And the food was amazing!!!
My wife and I had 5 days in NYC and as food and culture lovers, we really wanted to get the most out of our stay. We found Jeff's tour in the Lonely Planet and booked ourselves online. Easy to book and Jeff was quick to respond. The tour itself was fantastic! Jeff has done the leg-work to find the best local vendors that you would never find on your own - one place operates out of the back of a mobile phone shop! We've travelled a fair bit, but he still managed to surprise us. And his style is very easy-going. It feels less like a tour, and more like you're hanging out with a friend who's got this great little place they want to show you. Or make that, nine great little places. Just make sure you bring an appetite! Don't think twice. Just book it.
Anyone who can afford this tour isn't closely connected to the world it explores. The taste-bud pleasing samples of Ecuadoran and other Latin American cuisine are paired with the story of the people who support entire families - and help bring others here - on homemade delights they sell for a dollar to two. Your escort/guide/sociologist/philosopher Jeff makes the tour enlightening and not even a little intimidating - no judging! The streets become alive at night, and for our group the liveliness was accompanied by welcoming and friendliness - think of being invited into a family kitchen on a sidewalk, albeit a kitchen with the entire neighborhood wandering in and out. For a guaranteed full tummy and a smiling face, and enough food for thought to last a while, this is not to be missed.
I was visiting New York for a week and decided to take the Tastes of the World tour with a friend. I'm so glad I did -- Jeff was an excellent guide. He took us to food stands I never would have found on my own, and places probably most New Yorkers themselves don't know about. He was also really knowledgeable about the neighborhood (which is crazily, astonishingly diverse) and passionate about it, too. His enthusiasm was infectious, to be honest. I have already recommended this tour to a few friends that live in New York!
