Westfjord's Magic

By Syssa Einars

It has been said that you can only be cast a spell on if you believe in magic. Non-believers are supposedly immune to any spell casting and need not worry about the crazy people that do believe. However, the magical powers of the Westfjords in Iceland are indisputable, if it is because of the mesmerizing landscapes and amazing natural wonders or the fact that some of Iceland's most notorious witches throughout history come from there, I shall not say. But it's there and nobody escapes it. Getting there is a pleasure, as you will enjoy some of Iceland's most beautiful natural sites on your way, with a wide range of activities to choose from everywhere you stop. The highlight of the trip is a 3 day stay in Iceland's most isolated spot in Hornstrandir where you can enjoy longer or shorter hiking trips or simply just relax and enjoy being almost alone in the world. On the way back I will lead you directly to the boiling pot of magical history in Iceland, and if you're in luck, set you up on a date with a seer or a runic master for some outer-world insight to your worldly life.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula

The residence of Snæfellsjökull, Iceland's smallest glacier, yet the most famous and probably one of the most mystical natural wonders in Iceland.

Breiðafjörður Bay

A nature reserve on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Breiðafjörður boasts some very impressive natural features and cultural and historical heritage in and around it's more than 2.000 islands.

Látrabjarg Cliffs

The westernmost part of Europe and the continents largest bird cliff, home to millions of birds, including the gorgeous little puffin, the elegant northern gannet and the ever so charming razorbill.

Westfjords Peninsula

There is Iceland and then there is the Westfjords. To enjoy all it has to offer to the fullest, it would take as long as it would take for the rest of Iceland. A challenge for your visual senses as well as your driving skills as you may find it hard driving the car when you are to busy enjoying the amazing scenery. Let me arrange for a private driver to make this part of your trip more enjoyable.

Hesteyri Village

Once a blooming village, abandoned in 1952, this remotest settlement in Iceland now keeps a few lonely summer houses and a cute little inn with simple accommodation for weary travelers. Take a hike or explore the old village and its remains or simply just find a mossy mountainside to sit in and enjoy the solitude. It will not get better than this.

Strandir Coastline

For centuries this was one of the most remote areas in Iceland, home to some of this country's most famous witches and sorcerers and a refuge for criminals. Come and meet their 800 descendants that still live in the 4 little villages scattered by the coastline. No worries, they're perfectly harmless and most speak English.

Hvalfjörður Fjord

This natural pearl is packed with natural and historic sites that you can enjoy in an hour or a day, depending on how dedicated you are to getting to know this significant little fjord named after whales. If you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of one or two when driving through.
