Isernia Paleolithic Site

with Rinaldo P.

Discovered by accident, the Paleolithic Site of Isernia dates back 700.000 years ago. Rests of bison, elephants, hippos and lions are visible and well preserved.

A rich, diverse collection of Lithic tools displayed at the Paleolithic museum well testifies the development of medium to large brains of the first phase of human population of Europe. In fact, stones were first used in hunting and butchery, generally flint, but also obsidian, basalt, quartzite, jasper, limestone, etc. While the finding of a single Neolithic arrowhead is almost to testify how the human brain shifted from the use and development of the paleocortex to the neocortex, refining the ability and precision of the very first humans to strike at a distance.

Departure from Venafro, or I can pick you up at the train station in Isernia. The trip includes a visit to the city of Isernia, originally a Samnite settlement; the Archeological and Civic museums. During the walk in Isernia, you’ll be able to see the Fraternal fountain, one of the oldest fountains in Italy, dating back to Roman times. The fountain is famous for the Latin inscription, “AE PONT,” which is claimed being a stone plate coming from Pontius Pilate’s burial monument.
