Islands Hopping (8 Hours)

with Wouter V.

Cheung Chau and Peng Chau
This eight-hour trip calls at two of Hong Kong's most iconic islands: Cheung Chau and Peng Chau. The trip includes guided walking tours on both islands, and a seafood lunch at the Cheung Chau waterfront.

Cheung Chau is a dumbbell shaped island, with a population of about 23,000 people. It is known for its quiet lifestyle and rich cultural history. In early colonial times this island was separated in a British and a Chinese part, the British part largely serving as retreat and relaxation area for the colonists. To this day there are several Christian retreat centres on this island.
Major sights include the Pak Tai temple, an ancient rock carving and the Cheung Po Tsai (a notorious pirate who lived from 1786 to 1822) cave.

Peng Chau is by far the smallest of the inhabited islands of Hong Kong, at only 1.43 km2 it packs many interesting sights. This island used to be a major industrial base of Hong Kong, only remnants of which remain now after all factories closed in the 1970s. The local movie theatre closed a little later.
Main attractions include several temples, the remains of the old factories and the Fisherman's Rock.

Your Insider

I am a Dutch national living in Hong Kong for over a decade. I have much experience roaming the great outdoors, and know many of the best places first hand. The more I walk around the countryside, the more I am hooked to the beauty, and the more little gems I uncover. I hope to share this experience with foreign visitors, giving them a much broader and deeper experience of Hong Kong. Over the past decade I have been hiking around the countryside almost every weekend and holiday. There are few places that I have not visited at least once, many routes are familiar to me. Being involved in the local hiking and geocaching community has also given me a lot of in depth background information on what is out there, including details about local history, folklore and geology.
