Sightseeing in Florence

Yes, there are plenty of museums and churches to visit in Florence. A visitor would also be wise, however, to roam the streets and alleys with no purpose. The way the buildings envelop its passengers is cozy, just like the way the city is cradled by hills. There are few dangerous neighborhoods even by night. The Cascine and the Porta San Pierino are to be avoided and of course a vigilant eye is always recommended but, overall, you could walk the streets (with someone) at anytime; actually, the light changes the atmosphere drastically throughout the day so definitely explore it at varying times. Allow yourself to chat with a local along the way, make a new friend, try a new pastry, sneek a peek into a courtyard, live it like you were abiding to no watch.

First-timers

Put on your walking shoes then dedicate one day or a full half to the Uffizi Museum. Have a hot chocolate or a cappuccino at Rivoire in the adjacent Piazza Signoria. Then stroll to the Duomo. Walk to the top if your lungs can handle it. Visit the Porcellino Market for a few cheap but quality leather pieces. Watch the sunset as you walk along the Arno River.

Views

The best view of the entire city is from the Piazzale Michelangelo, home to one of the copies of Michelangelo's David. The nearby San Miniato al Monte church is equally astonishing in its position overlooking the city. One can enjoy other spectacular views from the rooftop bars such as from the Hotel Continentale, Rinascente's bar, Hotel Cavour's bar (opened in the last few years) and Museo Bardini's Terrace. There are also poetic views from the Boboli Gardens, from Ponte alle Grazie, If you're willing to travel by car a little head for a drink to Villa San Michele in Fiesole; the view is astonishing on the drive up there and from there. Other drives to note: Via Bolognese (especially between Lastra and Trespiano, where there are places to park the car); towards Monte Morello; and around Forte Belvedere.
