Food is another hugely important aspect of Santa Fe living. Apart from having one of the best farmers’ markets in the country, the city also has an impressive array of world-class restaurants. And, with the cultural mix that makes up Santa Fe, they include French, Cuban, Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Indian and African, as well as New Mexican. And, because Santa Feans take their food seriously, many places also feature local, organic, free-range and vegetarian items on their menus, in addition to the famous green chile.

Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the United States. Surrounded by stunning scenery and wide open vistas, the City Different, as it’s also known, lives up to it’s name. More a town than a city, Santa Fe, with a population of about 68,000, is a melting pot of cultures, arts, crafts, cuisine, music, alternative medicine, spirituality and healing. And all in an environment of warm, adobe architecture - no skyscrapers here - under brilliant blue skies. Not bad for one small city!
Alternative medicine and different healing modalities also feature large in Santa Fe. Here you can find acupuncturists, naturopaths, homeopaths, herbalists, aromatherapists, reiki practitioners, hypnotherapists, ayurvedic practitioners and energy healers of all kinds. There’s also no shortage of healing spas, including the internationally known Japanese health spa, Ten Thousand Waves.
And then there are the things that are uniquely Santa Fe, like the burning of Zozobra, an annual event held in early September, that signals the start of three days of fiestas. Zozobra, or ‘Old Man Gloom,’ is a giant puppet effigy, about 50 feet tall, intended to represent all the unhappy and dark events of the past year. Santa Feans write down their personal glooms on a piece of paper and drop them off at the offices of the local weekly newspaper. They are then burned and symbolically released, by the fire.

Art is definitely the driving force in this town. One in every six people in Santa Fe, works in the arts and art is everywhere. It’s displayed in coffee shops, appears in brightly colored murals downtown and is available in an impressive array of art galleries, over a hundred of them located on historic Canyon Rd, the city’s famous art street. Santa Fe is now the second largest art market in the country and the variety and abundance can be overwhelming. Offerings range from antique Native American rugs and pots, to sculpture and art that range from classic to cutting edge contemporary. There are more art galleries, per head of the population, in Santa Fe, than there are grocery stores!
Music is also part of the life blood of this city. As well as a wide assortment of live concert performances, from classical to jazz and from pop to opera, gifted musicians also perform in bars, coffee shops and restaurants, on street corners and even at the farmers’ market. And every summer, in the historic downtown Plaza, the city hosts the Santa Fe Summer Bandstand, six weeks of free, outdoor concerts, featuring a wide range of music and often featuring nationally, even internationally, known performers.
