Vayable Runs for Boston

We were deeply saddened by the tragic events of last week at the Boston Marathon. Stories of people turning back to help those in need and runners going straight from the finish line to donate blood at the hospital serve as a reminder that we, as a community, in the face of adversity, are resilient and good to one another.

We’ve been touched by the outpouring of support from our community. Our guides around the country have volunteered to lead runs as a fundraiser to help people most affected by the events of April 15.

On Sunday, April 28 no matter where you are and what shape you’re in, we will all run for Boston. Sign up for Vayable Runs for Boston by booking the event in your city. Over the week we’ll keep up updated by amounts raised by each city. All proceeds (including fees) go to the One Fund Boston.

Don’t see your city but want to lead a run? Sign up here to lead your own! Anyone can make a difference by just going on a run!

On April 28, we are all runners, and we are all Bostonians.

A Vayable Love Story: Mike and Erica

At Vayable, we are romantics. We love bringing people together and creating friendships; maybe, if the stars align the right way, something more will come out of it! With Valentine’s day around the corner, we thought that we would share our love story of two guides. Here is a guest post jointly written by Mike and Erica. Soon you will be able to book a joint beer and wine tour they will lead!

It was 12/12/12, a cold night in the SOMA district of San Francisco. Vayable’s holiday party was jamming inside the walls of Terroir, one of the best natural wine merchants you can come by. I post up at the bar, not knowing anyone inside, and barely connected to the Vayable community. Next to me is Mike, sommelier and key-speaker of the evening, and my soon-to-be boyfriend just waiting for the questions after his talk. Our connection was undeniable. After a few hours of meeting a people, but mostly getting nerdy with one another over aroma and taste, finish and complexity, we knew something special was there.

Our romance was serendipitous - just as our love for beer and passion for wine is. Vayable brought us together and now we hope to bring what we love to the Vayable community.

Some of the greatest ideas people conjure are when they are around a table - eating food, sipping glasses of fermented goodness, and engaging with each other. Community is formed with full bellies and open hearts. We hope to bring people together through an innovative, engaged, and delicious beer, wine and food pairing collaboration. For a very long time people have commented on the beautiful relationship between wine and food, and more and more these days people are also becoming interested in the dynamics between beer and food. We hope to see how exactly each sip makes eating more vibrant, how they contrast and compliment one another, while paying attention to how they affect one’s palette.

Our vision is rooted in both of our love for things craft - so much of what we have access to today is watered-down and capitalized to the point where you forget someone is actually making what you are using, what you are eating, what you are drinking. Small breweries, vineyards, and wineries exist everywhere, with people building something from a passion, from nothing, with their bare hands. Their hard work goes unnoticed by the masses, and we hope to change that, little by little, every single day.

We thank Vayable for bringing us together, for the gift of love and passion, and for the excitement of exploring the world.

Happy Holidays from Vayable!

What happens when you bring together a sommelier, a crepe maker, a portrait artist, and the vibrant characters that represent San Francisco? A Vayable night full of conversation, laughter, and ideas. The Vayable secret holiday party last week in our home base of San Francisco was an incredible gathering of travelers, guides, and friends.

Trip in Golden Gate Park: Hunting for Magical Mushrooms

You’d think that all the psychedelic mushrooms in Golden Gate Park would have been meticulously identified and documented by now since it’s the home of the Summer of Love and all. But alas, hippies with a predilection for psychedelics are not necessarily the most well-versed in Latin taxonomy or DNA sequencing. Alan Rockefeller, a mycologist who has spent the last ten years collecting and identifying mushrooms, has recently discovered a new type of hallucinogenic mushroom right here in San Francisco.

This mushroom, the psilocybe alenii, is apparently one of the strongest mushrooms ever known. Denizens in the park have been consuming them for ages, but it hasn’t been properly classified or submitted for peer review in a scientific journal until now. When we got wind of his discovery, we just had to see it for ourselves and went mushroom hunting with the Psychedelic Society of San Francisco. It started off with a brief talk where he showed about 20 different types of mushrooms and taught us everything from how to read a spore print to what the laws are around picking and consumption of wild mushrooms.

From gelatinous brain-like mushrooms to ones that looked like starfish to ones that have hallucinogenic properties, there are so many different types of mushrooms thriving in this cool, damp, and foggy fungal paradise that is Golden Gate Park. Every time we found a different kind of mushroom, we took it to Alan to identify. He looked at them and could tell immediately what type of mushroom it was, or with the help of some scratching (to inspect the layers) and tasting (much to our dismay).

Whether you’re looking for something that has mind expanding powers or just some delicious wild mushrooms for your upcoming dinner party, Alan knows the best ways to prepare them and, more importantly, which ones not to consume. Eating the wrong type of mushroom can be deadly, so it’s best to go with an expert who knows what he’s talking about!

Alan is now offering private mushroom hunting sessions for small groups and large through Vayable. If you’re interested in learning about mushrooms, be sure to book his experience to see for yourself. Tis the season because these mushrooms are most plentiful between October and January.

Old Rome Walking Tour with Esther

This is a guest post by Janny, one of our ambassadors in Shanghai who recently went on a trip to Europe! She went on Esther’s Old Rome Walking Tour and reports back here.

On the first day of my trip to Rome, I had the chance to meet Esther and explore the oldest area of the city. It was a wonderful experience with not only amazing history but also tasty local food.

The tour starts at Area Sacra, an easy-to-find starting point with many buses and metro stations nearby. It is located in the ancient Campus Martius, which has its origins in the Republican epoch starting from the 4th century BC. Following Esther, we walked through a hidden lane and arrived at the Jewish Quarter, where we found the marvellous Tortoise Fountain in a little square in front of Palazzo Mattei and Palazzo Costaguti.

Rome has Europe’s oldest surviving Jewish community and occupies a unique place in the history of the Diaspora. Jewish life in Rome was not easy - the walls of the ghetto separated Jews from the rest of society. They had no property rights, were only allowed to trade second-hand objects, and could not employ Christian staff. Outside the ghetto they had to wear the ‘Jewish sign’ to be easily recognized: men had to wear a yellow patch on their hats, women wore a yellow hankerchief (usually worn by prostitutes).

After learning about the fascinating history of the Jews in Rome, Esther and I crossed the first stone bridge in the city and arrived on Tiber Island. The Isola Tiberina has always been a mysterious place, shrouded in legend, surrounded by the river and linked inseparably to the origins of Rome. It was supposed to have arisen over an ancient ship, whose shape it still maintains. It’s unusual shape was further accentuated by the Romans, who enhanced the legend by building a stone prow and stern on it, giving it the shape of a warship, with the obelisk in the centre of the island like a ship’s mast!

At the end of the tour, we arrived at Trastevere. It is a picturesque medieval area located on the west bank of the Tiber. The area escaped the grand developments which changed the face of central Rome, and is a charming place to wander, eat and relax. Esther took me to a wonderful local food place and ordered some fantastic food for me to try. It was the perfect way to end the tour and rest our legs.

Over the course of two hours, we were able to see so many different places that showcase Italy’s rich heritage and culture in a very small corner of an amazing country. I ate where locals dined and travelled how locals travel. It was a huge experience crammed into a short period. I highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see Rome.

Secret Party in New York City @ The Back Room

Mix a connoisseur of the best treats in Chinatown, a rooftop bar hopper and a foodie from Queens and you get what only a New York Vayable community can serve-up – some great New York insider tips and a lovely meet-up. These were just some of the tour guides that attended the Vayable family meet-up at the Back Room, the Lower East Side speakeasy.

Sipping on signature cocktails from tea cups in the Victorian-styled bar, our CEO, Jamie, who had flown in from San Francisco, and the New York tour guides, talked about their wonderful tours and got to know others passionate about New York.

After a lovely night, Jeffrey mentioned he was leading his infamous tastes of Queens tour the next day and extended an invitation to the other tour guides of New York. Clearly this meet-up is has just been the catalyst in bringing together the ever-growing New York Vayable family!

Work With Us!

Recently our little team finished Y Combinator and raised more money than we can fit under our beds. Long story short, we’re hiring for positions in our beautiful, charming San Francisco office.

We believe in empowering people to make a living doing what they love and creating a world where having a passion in something is your source of financial stability. Technology should make our lives better by solving problems and enhancing real world interactions. All of us have met friends during our travels - in Peru, in Nepal, in Cambodia - who we wanted to help if only there was something like Vayable. We want to make it easy for people to connect and explore the world in more meaningful ways.

We’ve been inspired by unexpected hidden gems found off the beaten path, far from touristy parts of town. Benefits of tourism should be more widely distributed, and locals should have an influence on the neighborhoods, communities, and businesses that tourism dollars go to. More tourism dollars should stay in the local economy. After all, destinations are only appealing because of the cultural and natural heritage that has been cultivated by people who live there. We love our community and are constantly inspired by their generosity and love for their cities.

We also just want people to have kick-ass experiences when they travel. Other than that, we’re wicked fun, and you’ll be stoked to see us for 12 hours a day. We love to go hiking, do yoga, sail the seas, and live what we make. We have healthy foods for breakfast and lunch, but you can also request whatever you want, and we won’t judge you if you get a weekly bag of cookies. We like cookies too, and we eat pie on Fridays. So come along for the ride - we’re just getting started.

Apply Here.

“And what is it to work with love? Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy.” - Kahlil Gibran in The Profet

On Authenticity

Whenever people ask us why they should take Vayable tours, we always talk about the idea of authenticity. Wikipedia defines authenticity as “the truthfulness of origins, attributions, commitments, sincerity, devotion, and intentions.”

In the modern world “authenticity” can mean almost anything. It can mean identifying with “alternative” lifestyles and tastes; it can mean being effortlessly cool; it can mean being all natural without artificial flavors or packaging. Sometimes things trying hard to be “authentic” actually actually end up becoming laughably inauthentic. Things that mean anything actually end up meaning nothing.

To us, authenticity equates to a sense honesty - the things that people do in their daily lives, that they enjoy, when no one else is looking. Oftentimes, these are the things that are most telling, most beautiful. Take this royal cremation ceremony in Bali that our dear friend Michael was fortunate enough to participate in. From the chaotic ceremony itself to the onlookers quietly watching from the sides, you can see into the soul of the people and the culture.

We love seeing the eyes of professional tour guides light up when we explain the concept of Vayable. “You mean instead of the sights that everyone has in their list, I can show people what I like to do?” someone once said to me during a guide vouching interview. As travelers, we oftentimes don’t know what we want, and some of the best Vayable tours feature guides who do not compromise on what they show travelers because they know their city best.

When we go to a faraway place, we want to eat la comida típica, but much of the time restaurants that serve this type of food have huge placards on storefronts beckoning to tourists with their “authentic” fare. Every single time without fail, the low-key neighborhood haunt that’s been a local destination for generations will be much, much better. Explore the tapas scene in Barcelona with a local chef instead of going to some place with a flashy sign on La Rambla.

The tourism industry as a whole is really bad at figuring out what people want; take the prevalence of double-decker bus tours as evidence. So we challenge you to put your afternoon or day into the hands of someone else and trust them to show you their world. At most, you’ll have the time of your life. At the very least, you’ll gain a better understanding of the world around you.
