Peninha and Saint Saturnin. A bush of cedars. Touro creek. Megalith Adrenunes, an enigma
Extension: 6 kms. Difficulty: Easy/Moderate. Duration: 3H00.
Start: 30 minutes before sunset at Peninha parking.
Sintra, this mountain plenty of legends, myths and mists!
This trail runs mainly west of Peninha. Starts right at Peninha, an area that shows signs of human permanence since the Neolithic. Peninha is surmounted by its chapel, which overlooks a vast landscape stretching from Espichel cape at the south, to Berlengas, in the north. The path then runs down alongside an older chapel, of S. Saturnin, now abandoned and woefully under degradation, and continues through a forest of Buçaco cedars (Cupressus lusitanica). A little ahead, a detour towards a small lake. The vegetation is more lush here, and along, what is yet, only the beginning of Rio Touro, the 'Bull creek'.
In Adrenunes we have another of the landmarks along the way. On top of a hill, 426 meters above sea level , there is an entire structure made of small boulders, among which opens a gallery with five feet tall that may have been used as a collective necropolis, in the megalithic era. Checking up the arrangement of stones, in relation to the setting of the sun and the moon, and the Roca Cape, relatively close, it can be concluded to be a natural megalithic structure with stones that support each other but, where, later, there was human intervention, to take the form of an anta. This is only one explanation for the riddle of Adrenunes, and the disposition of its rocks. However, some people do not agree with that one and stress another point: that this heap of stones, that's all about it, there have been no human intervention, is just the reflection of the natural activity of natural forces...
