Bike the New Hipster Haven

with Annie

3 reviews

Forget the Mission, the real hipsters, artists, and true leftists have moved on to the next cool place - Oakland. Hop on your fixie (or rent a bike - we won't tell) and explore one of the most exciting new urban developments in the Bay Area with Annie. She lives on a sailboat and, in typical Oakland fashion, is a outdoors adventurer, sailing instructor, clothing designer, environmentalist, and photographer.

Explore one of the oldest conserved estuaries in the Bay Area, get personal with local artist collectives, and try out some amazing eateries all atop a two wheeler. You'll get to see everything from natural heritage to rich history to current developments in this new hipster haven.

Bring your bike or rent one directly from a bike rental shop (the price is not included). We will be biking for about 10-15 miles with breaks in between to check out some public art, visit art collectives, and stop for some food. We will end our adventure at one of the oldest pubs in the Bay Area!

I am a lifelong adventurer and artist. I love a good well rounded journey that involves a healthy amount of exercise, food and arts. I have family here in the City, and have visited and lived here on and off throughout my life. I love the nature of the area, and have always enjoyed the art and music scene here too. I am a photographer, clothing designer, raft guide, sailing instructor, and general adventurer. I have my undergraduate degree in Anthropology of Arts and Music, and my Master's degree in ocean and river conservation through communications and law. Full profile

Annie showed our group places I never knew existed in Oakland-- both natural, art-wise, and food-wise. She is so enthusiastic, that I couldn't help but have a ton of fun! I will definitely be returning to those places on my own. As a local I had a great day out! I'd recommend this tour for both locals and folks from out of town. I learned a lot while enjoying some fresh air. And, the biking wasn't difficult, which I had been a little worried about given all the hills in the bay area. There was nothing strenuous, and we went over 10 miles!

Biking with Annie was so much fun! We went past the ducks and saw a few hipsters as well. The stretch along the San Leandro Bay was gorgeous and flat - I've never biked such an easy 15 miles. We stopped at an estuary where the park ranger told us about conservation efforts and the various bird species that live there. The highlight of the trip was getting to go into a gorgeous art studio / living space and sharing stories with the artists who live in an art collective in the area. They even made us homemade sandwiches and soup and were more than happy to answer our questions about the collective!

What fun!! Amazing ride and a privileged peek into some spots I can assure you I never would have found or explored on my own. Annie's a great guide and had homemade pecan pie for us at the shoreline park. You don't get that everyday. Nice mix of art and outdoors. Definitely recommend!
