Real Embrace Portugal invites you to travel back in time and meet al-Usbuna , the Islamic city. This route, which does not exhaust the subject, follows the path of "Moorish wall" or "Old Fence" defensive structure built during the Roman rule and rebuilt in the Islamic period.
Few are the traces that remains of the Islamic period who resisted time and natural disasters: the Acropolis , the Medina , the urban layout, characteristic of "Moorish" cities, and some curtain wall sections, but the Islamic legacy has remained throughout the centuries preserved by the dominated Moors that after the Christian reconquest, could not leave for Islam and preserved their traditions and customs.
Our route starts from the Casa dos Bicos and, from this location, we will identify, in some cases imagine, the gates, the arches, the wickets, which for centuries have protected the city: the "Moorish wall". The visit will continue today at Largo de Santo António da Sé where was located the main entrance to the Medina .
Moment to remember, on the steps of the Church of Santa Maria Maior, ( built above the ancient Mosque Aljama) , the legendary rich heritage, which we highlight the many stories of love between beautiful Moorish women and Christian soldiers, as the "story" of Subay'a and Cristiano.
Gate of Alfôfa, Bab al-Hawha, the current Street Milagre de Santo António, was initiated the road access to the suburbs of the city. Our tour takes the direction of the Pátio de D. Fradique where was the previous ancient gate of the fence. Here we take a break to drink a juice at the Palacio Belmonte.
Towards to Portas do Sol, also called Porta do cemitério, Bab al-Macbara (gave access to the Muslim cemetery) and already in the Pátio das Oficinas, FRESS observe the largest curtain wall visible nowadays.
Also in al-Hamma, we will identify in the Pátio da Senhora da Murça, the gate and Alfama Tower ( Bab al-Hamma) and in Jewry Street.
