Lisbon in Black and White

with Real E.

"(...) Spent years going through things, looking at things unseen, of which we are not even aware that exists, until one day we learn to see and there is light... That is, color! "

Professor Arquiteto José Aguiar

The traveler who sees Lisbon for the first time, is surprised by the diversity of the urban structure of the city and its colorful: the white of the "Moorish" neighborhoods, yellow ocher city of Pombal, the many facades of buildings covered with tiles, the Tagus light, a brand identity of Portugal, the cobblestone.

In "black and white" we discover this colorful Lisbon and enjoy the sites where the details of pavers enabled the creation of true wonders of undeniable historical and cultural heritage, unfortunately not always recognized.

The route takes us through the history of cobblestone, at three different moments:

1 - Starting on Avenida da Liberdade , where are the most beautiful examples of cobblestone, we head to the Square D. Pedro IV (Rossio), with technical sidewalk "open sea". Mandatory stop in the street of Victoria , in honor of the paver, a profession endangered. We continue towards the Praça do Municipio and end in the beautiful Praça Luis de Camões and the Largo do Chiado , where we will seize to drink a coffee in the company of Fernando Pessoa.

2 - Towards Belém we stop on Praça Duque da Terceira , where the pavement is labeled by dark stone, in contrast to other observed locations.

Already in Belém , and the Monument of Discoveries , surrounded by the "open sea" a map with sea routes of the Portuguese navigators.

Ideal place for a well earned break and lunch time.

3 - Symbol of contemporaneity, the eastern area of Lisbon, Park das Nações , gives us designs, in cobblestone, whith maritime motifs and mythological figures. The World Expo 1998, held in this part of town, contributed greatly to focus international attention on the potencial of the Portuguese cobblestone.
