Ostia, the first Roman colony, became immediately a river port acquiring a commercial function to supply Rome with food stuff, particularly wheat, even if its strategic military function as naval base certainly prevailed.
The first settlement can be traced back to the beginning of the 4th century B.C., immediately after the defeat of the Etruscan town of Veio, situated on the right bank of the river, which fell to the Roman army in 396 B.C.
Castel of Julius II.
The Castle is located in a suburban area of Ostia near the entrance to the excavations. Commissioned by Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, the future Pope Julius II, this castle was built along the left bank of the Tiber loop under the pontificate of Sixtus IV.
In the price of 130$ is included my percentage, and the price of the qualified and authorized guide. So far guide is available in Italian, English and if requested i can provide a guide in French.
You're asked to book it 7 days before, because the castle is opened only on Thu and Sun, and many times is already full.
You will pay the entrance fee (10€) directly at the sight, because there are discount policies.
Next to the sight there's a wonderful restaurant where you can eat fresch and high quality fish in an old Roman atmosphere.
