Can you imagine what life was like in medieval Barcelona?

Romantic knights on white stallions risking their lives in jousting tournaments for the love and honour of virtuous maidens? Brave and fair kings setting out on Christian crusades to faraway lands? Cunning merchants and crafty artisans going about their daily business in the narrow cobblestone streets of the fast-growing city?

Add the Black Death, inquisition, freemasons, dark magic, weird beliefs and customs to the picture and you encounter Barcelona during one of its most fascinating and exciting periods!

On this walking tour we will step back into the darkest ages of the city and discover the authentic and atmospheric district of Born – the centre of medieval commerce, trade, arts and crafts. Highlights include:

• Santa María del Mar Church
• Fossar de les Moreres
• Aristocratic Palaces of the Montcada Street
• En Marcus Chapel
• Masonic Headquarters of Barcelona
• Santa Caterina Market
• Paseo del Born inquisition site
• Ladies’ Street

Having lived in many different places in Europe and overseas I first came to Spain as an exchange student a few years ago and immediately fell in love with this fascinating and diverse country. After graduating from Oxford I moved to Barcelona to work in academic research but found the office environment too stifling and missing in human contact so I decided to pursue my passion for travel, languages, history, culture, and working with people by becoming a Local Guide and a freelance European Tour Director. My first occupation allows me to share my genuine enthusiasm for Barcelona and Catalonia and excellent knowledge of its art, history, architecture, current affairs, cuisine and culture with visitors from all over the world. In my second role I travel all around Europe on a regular basis so whether you are looking for the best classical music concert in Vienna, the strongest espresso in Sorrento, the most picturesque mountain view in Lucerne, or even just a way of avoiding queues to the Eiffel Tower - I am your local expert. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and let me help you create a Catalan, Spanish or European holiday of your dreams! Full profile

This tour is amazing, and Jana is by far the most interesting guide I've ever had. She covered a lot of ground, while making the history of Barcelona intriguing and captivating. She is full of so much knowledge, and shares it in an interesting and wonderful way. My family and I can not rave enough about her and the tour. It was the highlight of our trip to Barcelona. If you are in the city, Jana's tour is an absolute must.
