Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of the Christian Science Religion, which is still centered in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1866, Mrs. Eddy had a personal healing experience that led her to believe the Bible was the key to the healing of illness and injury. Building on this experience and revelation, she began writing her beliefs down. This resulted in her book "Science and Health," published in 1875 and with it the seeds of the Christian Science Religion were born. The NY Times reported in 2010 that there were about 1,100 churches in the United States and 600 overseas; according to the Church in 2008 it had about 400,000 members worldwide.
The Christian Science Religion is centered in Boston and the site now comprises The First Church of Christ, Scientist (also known as “The Mother Church”), the extensive Mary Baker Eddy Library, the Christian Science Publishing Society (publishers of the Christian Science Monitor newspaper), a 686-foot-long reflecting pool and the unique Mapparium.
I'm happily married for many years. I am the father of two and the grandfather of three. I retired about two years ago from positions as a special education teacher's assistant and as a Court Investigator for the State of Massachusetts. I grew up in the Boston area and have always had a strong interest not only in local history, but history in general.
