The Sacred Way meaning the road leading to Heaven. It is part of the Ming Tombs complex. The emperor, known as the "Son of Heaven" went through the sacred road to the sacrificial altar to converse Heaven during his reign, naturally, after his death, he would also go through the Sacred Way back to heaven. It is a road usually built in front of an ancient Chinese mausoleum, which symbolically led emperors to Heaven. The Sacred Way in the Ming Tomb is a typical one.
Dingling is the only one excavated in this graveyard up till now. Zhu Yijun, the thirteenth emperor of the Ming Dynasty was burial together with his two empresses. Constructed between 1584 and 1590, this mausoleum used to have bridges, a stele pavilion, halls and towers and annexes on the ground. Hundreds of years later, only a stone tower, Bright Tower, survives following several fires. Behind the tower is the underground palace, 27 meters in depth. Visitors may enter via a tunnel. The stone palace occupies an area of 1,195 square meters and has five halls. Gates of the main halls are made of white marble, with fine thrones in the central hall, coffins and burial chests at the rear hall. Some precious articles excavated are on exhibition like crowns, ornaments, and utensils.
Pick up at your hotel around 8:00am. Tour Sacred Way(1hour) and Underground Palace (Dingling, one of the 13 Ming Dynasty Tombs complex ). From the Yongle Emperor onwards, 13 Ming Dynasty Emperors were buried in this area. You will visit Dingling(1hour), the tomb of the Wanli Emperor, which is the only one of the Ming Dynasty Tombs to have been excavated.
