Beijing Magical Islamic Day Tour

with David

Beijing Zoo is on Xizhimenwai Street (Xizhimenwai Dajie), in the downtown Beijing area of Xicheng District. With an area of 90 hectares (222 acres), it ranks the largest zoo in China. It is also the earliest Chinese zoo open to the public and has the largest variety of animals of all the zoos in China. The zoo has fostered a good relationship with other zoos in over fifty countries and districts. Animals that are presented to China by other countries and celebrities are bred and can be seen here.

A lot of guests may be curious when reading the names "Xisi", "Dongsi", "Xidan" and "Dongdan" on a Beijing city map. They are numbers connecting to directions, but reality goes further than that. Actually, there is a story about Pailou . Pailou is a traditional Chinese architecture component. It would be erected at the main road leading to a "Fang" (similar to block). In places like Xisi and Dongsi, there had four Pailou respectively. Toward each direction, there was a Pailou, and they just gathered around a crossroad.

The Niujie Mosque covers an area of approximately 6000 square meters. The mosque is a mixture of Islamic and Chinese cultures. From the outside, its architecture shows traditional Chinese influence while the inside has mostly Islamic decorations. The mosque, built out of timber, is home to some important cultural relics and tablets such as the upright tablet of an emperor's decree proclaimed in 1694 during the Qing Dynasty.

The Temple of Heaven is round in the north and square in the south, implying the traditional Chinese belief that there is a "round heaven and square earth". Two layers of surrounding walls divide the temple into the Inner Altar and the Outer Altar. The two altars, connected by a 360-metre-long raised walk called the Vermilion Steps Bridge, are arranged in a line forming a north-south axis 1,200 meters long.
